When Pastor Yoshi unlatched the door of his home to see who was pounding on it, he immediately recognized the group of men standing before him. Their saffron-colored headbands along with the sticks and iron bars in their fists clearly identified the 10 men as members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad<\/em> (VHP), a militant nationalist Hindu group known for beating and harassing Christians. Yoshi braced himself for the beating that was sure to come.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their visit that evening in late 2009 wasn\u2019t totally unexpected, but the pastor hadn\u2019t expected them so soon. Every Indian<\/a> village has an informant who reports anti-Hindu activity to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), an extremist military group, and the village VHP informant had visited their home in India\u2019s<\/a> northern Uttar Pradesh state earlier that day looking for Yoshi. Yoshi\u2019s wife, \u201cAja,\u201d had told the man her husband wasn\u2019t home because he was out preaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hindu activists were upset because a couple of weeks earlier, Yoshi had showed The JESUS Film <\/em>to about 400 people in a rural village in Uttar Pradesh. Afterward, Hindu leaders accused Yoshi of being \u201canti-national\u201d and an American agent, serious accusations from groups whose stated goals are to cleanse India and make it a pure Indian<\/a> society.<\/p>\n\n\n\r\n\t

Although now seen as a threat to the nationalist Hindu groups, Yoshi was raised in a Hindu family believed to be descended from the Hindu deity Krishna, also known as the Supreme Being. As a young man, however, Yoshi found peace listening to Christian radio programs, and he gave his life to Christ at age 19. He was the first convert to Christianity in his family. He led his wife to the Lord in 2004 and entered full-time ministry in 2006.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Yoshi recognized Santhram Singh, the infamous VHP district leader, at his front door, he wondered if he was about to give up his life for Jesus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We Will Burn You”<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Santhram grabbed Yoshi and dragged him about 50 yards down the road. \u201cThey were verbally abusing me and using vulgar language about my mother and sister,\u201d Yoshi recalled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Yoshi\u2019s 3-year-old son ran crying after his father, Aja was alerted to what was happening and came to stand beside her husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yoshi argued with the men, telling them that under the Indian constitution he was free to share his religion with others. Santhram slapped him in the face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m not critiquing Hinduism,\u201d Yoshi told him. \u201cI\u2019m telling people about Jesus.\u201d Yoshi later told VOM workers that although he was not afraid, he knew his situation was serious. \u201cMy heart was not trembling,\u201d he said, \u201cbut I knew only God could help me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yoshi\u2019s wife, Aja, stepped between her husband and Santhram, and the men then turned their anger toward her, telling her to make her husband stop preaching. They verbally abused her for another 30 minutes. However, Aja was unshaken by their threats. \u201cYou found us [while we were] alone here,\u201d she scolded. \u201cHow about you come to where my husband is preaching if you are so courageous? See if the people are for you or for him!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Aja argued with the men, Yoshi received a phone call from a friend and stepped aside to answer the call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Hindu activists continued to threaten Aja and pressure her to make Yoshi stop preaching. \u201cWe\u2019ll burn him like in Odisha!\u201d they yelled. \u201cYou know what we did in Odisha to that fellow and his kids.\u201d They were referring to an incident in 1999 in which Hindu activists burned Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two young sons to death while they slept in their car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diminutive, soft-spoken Aja only replied, \u201cBurn us. We don\u2019t fear that.\u201d She was sure they were all going to be killed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly, someone realized Yoshi was on the phone. \u201cHe\u2019s calling the police,\u201d they said. Within a minute, the men had piled into a jeep and left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unstoppable<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Shortly afterward, the pastor and his family were kicked out of their rented home. The activists had pressured their landlord to evict them. In the years since their run-in with the VHP, they\u2019ve been forced to move eight times because the Hindu activists threaten their landlords each time they move. Even some Christians are afraid to associate with the family publicly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through all this, though, the light continues to shine in Pastor Yoshi\u2019s eyes. His confidence is in a future with Christ. He continues to share the gospel and continues to lead a house church of 150 people while overseeing 300 other house churches in the area. Yoshi is one of the hundreds of front-line<\/a> workers<\/a> VOM is supporting in India<\/a> with gospel kits, transportation tools, Bibles<\/a> and other materials to help them share the gospel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
